Bulbs (radish, beet, turnip, etc.)

A. Look over the outside for holes.
B. Slice under the leaves and check the cut surface for signs of penetration (Illustrations 170-172).
C. Cut the bulb into several slices (widthwise) and check for a tunnel caused by a worm (Illustrations 173-175). If an affected area is found, it may be removed and the remainder of the vegetable may be eaten.

Black or brown stains, cracks, or dryness in bulbs are growth defects and do not indicate infestation.
