shabbos

Question:

What would be the halacha if chas v’shalom someone noticed, for example, an electrical problem in his house on shabbos which could potentially start a fire, and it’s clear to him that he can get everyone out of the house out before anything serious happens. Is it mutar to call the fire department? Can he ask a goy to call? Can the Rav can please give some general rules and advise?
I was also wondering what the halacha would be about calling the police if you noticed that someone is breaking into your neighbors house and you are certain they aren’t home?

Answer:

I need to know more about the specifics of the case. What do you mean by “potentially start a fire”, is it a real chance or is it just a case of nerves… See O:CH 334-26, M:B 334-72.
