Passul Sefrei torah please do not post

Question:

Please do not post…We have two passul sifrei torah at home. A member of my family moved them from the basement into a closet upstairs. When i opened the closet i saw that they were standing directly on the floor of the closet.(not in a “disrespectful way” but nonetheless on the floor. I put a piece of wood underneath of them. first of all is that enough? And second is fasting required because they were on the floor? I gave a little tSedaka. Also when I picked one of them up it didn’t drop but moved between like half of an inch and an inch up and down and re touched the floor as I was getting grip, is that considered falling? Please advise. Thanks!

Answer:

Hi

In consultation with R’ Y. Feinhandler, author or Ginzei Hakodesh, and Horav M. M. Karp shlit”a, they said that since the closet is not meant for walking inside it, and people don’t walk there at all, ( assuming that that is the case and it isn’t a large walk-in closet). Therefore it is not considered a floor, and there technically it isn’t considered disrespectful in the sense that the Sefer Torah can not be there. Nevertheless it is better that it be kept in top of something and not on the actual floor.

Best wishes
